LIBRARY HAPPENINGS AROUND THE DISTRICT:

Our elementary librarians have been busy this past six weeks collaborating with teachers studying insects, reptiles, amphibians, plants, seeds, tall tales, fairy tales, poetry, the life of Sam Houston and the Civil War.  The Big6 research process was used with fifth graders preparing their science camp projects and research lessons were taught on dictionary and thesaurus skills, citing sources and understanding the Dewey Decimal System.  Biographies were studied for Women's History Month and students had fun learning about Cinderella stories from all over the world.

Celebrations were held on several campuses to celebrate Dr. Seuss's and Arthur's Birthdays, complete with guest speakers and party decorations. The fifth graders at PES played chess skills playing Checkmate vs. Stalemate in the library and went on a Library scavenger hunt using research skills. Students at WPS had fun acting out the story of Little Red Hen using props and comparing the story elements of a fractured fairy tale with the original fairy tales.

Our middle and high school librarians were busy teaching the Big6 research skills of writing good questions, findng resources, note taking, citing sources, and website evaluation. Lessons were also taught on recognizing propaganda and persuasive techniques in advertising, web sites, and articles.

Creating Vokis at PMS
Students with author, Varian Johnson
Librarians integrated several technology applications using the Web2.0 tools of Glogster, Animoto, PicassoHead, and Wix into their lessons. Students at WVMS learned how to create digital book trailers (like movie trailers but for books) and students at PMS had fun creating their own Voki at their Read It Forward celebration.  Our high school students read My Life as a Rhombus for their Read It Forward book and were treated with an evening with the author, Varian Johnson at the PHS PAC. Lessons were also taught using our PISD databases of Encyclopedia Britannica, Nettrekker, ABC Clio and CultureGrams. Our high school librarians have introduced LibGuides to their faculties which integrates library resources with the teachers' assignments that students can access 24/7 from school or home.

Door Prizes
Our librarians were heavily involved in our state Texas Library Association Conference this year.  It was held at the Austin Convention Center, April 12-15. Marsha Saucier chaired the Strong Libraries Strong Scores Conference, a mini-conference for school administrators from around the state.  Over 80 administrators attended and were treated to presentations by Robert Scott, TEA Comissioner; David Warlick, a leader in digital technology from North Carolina; Melody Paschall, Asst. Supt. from Grapevine-Colleyville; Marla McGhee, professor from Lewis & Clark Univ. in Oregan; and presentations on the five roles of the school librarian by librarians from around the state. Several of our PISD administrators, as well as two of our board members, were able to attend. Our elementary librarians were responsible for the Texas Bluebonnet Luncheon which was attended by over 1500 librarians.  Our librarians were responsible for creating all the table decorations, the program, and hundreds of door prizes.

Our librarians continue to be leaders on their campuses by being actively involved in staff developments, PTO presentations, DAAC, CAAC, Literacy Committee, and daily video announcements.  Two of our librarians were chosen to represent their campuses on the District Budget Committee and several librarians are sponsors for Student Council , Geography Bee, and the Jr. National Honor Society
