LIBRARY HAPPENINGS AROUND THE DISTRICT
This past fall semester our PISD librarians logged at total of 11,241 collaborative meetings with teachers. Elementary librarians have been busy coordinating library lessons with the bundles and teaching the Super3/Big6 research lessons and introducing the 2X2, Mockingbird, and Bluebonnet books. The elementary librarians are also very instrumental in managing the Accelerated Reading programs on each campus.
Our secondary librarians have been busy collaborating with teachers and the classroom assignments to teach our students information literacy skills. They have introduced the PISD databases, shown students how to construct internet searches resulting in better "hits," taught students how to evaluate websites, and how to correctly cite their sources.
Technology is a big part of instruction in our libraries. Our librarians have been busy teaching students and staff how to navigate our libraries' websites and online catalog, as well as, showing them how to access and use our district databases (Nettrekker, ABC-Clio, Culture Grams, Maps101, Britannica Online, Ebsco, etc.) A few of our librarians have Promethian Boards and are using them with each library lesson.
Our librarians are also very active on their campuses and in our district, totaling over 50 different leadership positions. Our librarians conduct staff developments on copyright law, library services, resources, and databases. Many of our librarians are either chairs or members of various committees (Technology, Literacy, Leadership, DAAC, CAAC, AVID, ELA, TAP Leadership, Social, Sunshine) and are regularly involved in planning and giving PTO presentations. Many have taken leadership positions as the UIL Coordinator, Honor Society sponsor, Diversity Day presenter, and Geo Bee sponsor. Most of our elementary librarians are also in charge of the video announcements on their campuses. One of our elementary librarians was even chosen as a TAP Mentor on her campus and another elementary librarian was awarded two grants this past fall. (A+ Education Foundation and Pflugerville Education Foundation) Our librarians have also been chosen to coordinate the Bluebonnet Luncheon at the TLA Annual Conference this April that will be attended by over 3,000 librarians.
Our librarians are constantly involved in staff development training this past fall. They received professional development in a new software program called MARC Wizard that will standarize and clean up all the district book records. At each monthly library meeting the Instructional Technology staff has taught the librarians a new Web2.0 device. So far, they have learned how to create web pages using WIX, digital posters using Glogster, book trailers using Animoto, and how to use blogs and wikis. Several of our librarians attended a collaboration seminar, while others have received additional AR training.
